How to Get Rid of the Cigarette Smell in Your Home for Good

Lingering cigarette smoke is not just unpleasant, but it is also dangerous. Secondhand smoke poses a serious health risk that that should be avoided at all costs. If you have a smoker in your family, it is up to you how to best to tackle the subject to start the process of eliminating the smell. However, sometimes lingering cigarette smoke arises from other situations: a guest stays over and smokes without asking, or perhaps you move into a new house that was previously owned by the smoker.

Whatever the case may be, you’re here because you want the smell gone for good. Aladdin Air Conditioning & Heating has extensive experience in air purification and is here to help! Follow these three steps to get rid of the cigarette smell for good.

1. Remove the Source

If someone in your home smokes, the first step to take is to rule out the possibility of smoking in the house. Secondhand smoke is extremely dangerous to both children and adults, and thanks to central HVAC systems, air is circulated throughout the house. So even if there is a restricted smoking area, that contaminated air will still travel and affect all other parts of the home. Do you and your children the favor and move the smoking out of the house. Better yet, encourage the smoker to stop altogether. Everyone benefits from cleaner air and lungs.

2. Clear the Air

Start by airing out your home. Open all of the windows and leave them open for as long as is reasonable. Fire up your air purifier, but be sure to check the filter before doing so. If you don’t already have one, get an air purifier installed with Aladdin. A purifier will not only help dissipate the smell, but will also keep your air clean for years to come, helping you and your family stay healthy.

Place bowls of white vinegar or baking soda around your home (at least one per room) to help absorb the smell. You can also sprinkle baking soda on your furniture or carpets. Do not try to use air fresheners; they will only mask the smell and add more chemicals to the air. This will only contribute to the uncleanliness of the air. Air-purifying house plants can also help absorb and eliminate the scent.

3. Clean, Clean, Clean

You have to thoroughly clean your entire home–literally from top to bottom–in order to get rid of the scent for good. Ceilings are the biggest offenders in terms of retaining smoke. Clean both the walls and the ceilings with a mixture of ammonia and glycol to neutralize the smell. As always, be aware that these harsh chemicals can be dangerous to children and pets so they should be kept out of the room so long as the chemicals are in use. Test a small area of the wall to see how it takes to the chemicals before applying them all over. If you are opposed to ammonia, vinegar can also be effective.

Be sure to check back on the walls and ceilings after letting them dry. There is a chance that the scent has lingered and you will have to repeat the process. If desired, you can apply a sealant and then repaint the walls; that should help eliminate the smell once and for all. You may also choose to replace any fabric in your home such as your carpets, drapes, or pillows. They can retain scent for a very long time and it might be more effective just to replace them.
