Helpful Steps to Solving Your AC Problem
Is your air conditioner not keeping your home as cool as you’d like? Your first instinct may be to call an HVAC company for repairs, but fortunately, there are a couple steps you can take to figure out the source of the problem and get it fixed on your own. This handy guide from Aladdin Air Conditioning & Heating covers useful tips to get your AC back up and running in top-notch shape.
1. Check Your Thermostat
One of the most common questions that is asked when people try fixing devices is: “Did you turn it off and then back on?” It may seem like an annoying question to be asked, but oftentimes, the simplest solution is the right one. While turning an AC on and off isn’t the right move, checking your thermostat is. If your air vents aren’t blowing cool air, it could be because your thermostat isn’t set to cooling or you’ve turned the unit off by accident. Adjusting your thermostat will help restore cool air to your home while avoiding the hassle of calling a repair company.
2. Replace Your Air Filters
It can be easy to overlook your air filters, but you need to ensure they get replaced regularly so that your HVAC system works correctly. Dirty air filters block airflow, which can prevent the cool air your AC produces from being circulated through your home. It also causes your air conditioner to work overtime, making it less efficient. Essentially, you’re paying more for less cooling power when your air filters are dirty. If left unaddressed for long enough, it can also cause a whole slew of other problems with your unit.
If you see a layer of dirt or dust on your air filters, it’s time to replace them. Then, set a reminder to replace them every 3 months or as recommended on your air filter’s packaging.
3. Turn Your Circuit Breaker On
If your circuit breaker has tripped or you’ve been switching breakers on and off during electrical work in your home, your air conditioner might have stopped receiving power. Check your home’s electrical panel and ensure that the breaker that powers your AC is flipped to the ON position.
However, if your breaker immediately trips when you try to turn your AC on, don’t flip the breaker again. This indicates a larger problem and should be checked out by a professional.
4. Inspect Your Outdoor Unit
From leaves to debris, your outside AC unit can get dirty over time. While a little bit of dirt is to be expected, an unclean unit can cause insufficient cooling for your home. Go check your outdoor unit and clear and leaves, branches, or other debris. If it’s dirty, gently hose it off.
Another issue that may be causing your AC’s problem is if your outdoor unit is blocked. Your AC should have at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit. If you have patio furniture, bushes, or other things in the way of the unit, clear them out.
5. Open Air Vents
Is one room in your house simply not cooling down while others are? Make sure the air vents are open. Closed air vents block off the airflow, so your rooms won’t cool down no matter how hard your air conditioner tries. You should always leave air vents open an unblocked, so go around your home an check that all vents are open and not covered or blocked by furniture, rugs, etc.
